As the death toll in the tragic Air India Dreamliner crash in Ahmedabad reached 274 by Saturday, the Tata Group has confirmed that compensation will also be extended to the 33 individuals who lost their lives on the ground.
According to a media report, each of these victims will receive ₹1 crore, the same amount promised for passengers. In addition, the Tata Group has assured that all medical expenses for those injured in the crash will be fully covered. “We are committed to ensuring that every injured person receives complete medical care and support,” the group stated.
Those affected by the crash include doctors, medical students, hospital staff, and local residents from the Meghaninagar area, which lies close to the crash site near the airport.
The Tata Group will assist in reconstruction of the BJ Medical College hostel, which was severely damaged in the Dreamliner crash.
When asked whether the Tatas will provide any assistance beyond the financial compensation like offering jobs to the next of kin, an official said, “nothing has been decided at the moment. We are still assessing the situation and investigation has begun.”
In addition to the ₹1 crore compensation announced by the Tata Group, families of passengers who lost their lives in the crash will also receive nearly ₹1.5 crore from insurance companies. The main insurers of Air India’s policy include Tata AIG General Insurance (which holds over 40% share as the lead insurer), ICICI Lombard General Insurance, New India Assurance, and other public sector general insurers. The ultimate liability for the payout will be covered by reinsurers, with AIG leading the group.
