Air India Flight AI-171 crash near Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport, which hit a hostel for medical students, B J Medical College (BJMC) has cancelled all ongoing and upcoming internal exams for MBBS students.
The college has also cancelled summer vacations for all medical staff and doctors, asking them to help care for the injured.
This decision affects more than 500 students, especially first- and second-year students, many of whom were staying in the hostel that was struck by the Boeing Dreamliner.
More than 200 students, including MBBS residents, have vacated their hostels and returned home due to trauma and fear.
According to the media report, at the college, at least 40 students who were present during the crash remain in a state of deep shock and distress.
The examinations will be rescheduled once students have recovered from the psychological impact, officials said.
“In light of the current mental and emotional state of our students, and the logistical disruption caused by the collapse of the mess-cum-hostel building, all internal theory and practical exams stand postponed until further notice,” a senior official from BJMC confirmed.
The plane’s wing hit the mess building during the crash, which had both the students’ hostel and dining area.
Since the mess was on the first and second floors, students and interns now don’t have access to regular meals and basic services.
The college has also cancelled summer vacations for all medical faculty and doctors.
The second part of the summer break was supposed to start on June 13, but now all medical staff have been asked to return to work from June 14.
This decision was made due to the urgent need for medical care after the plane crash. BJMC doctors are helping treat the injured at Civil Hospital.
