As fewer students show interest in degree engineering courses, more self-financed colleges are giving up their management quota seats to the Admission Committee for Professional Courses (ACPC).

This trend, which has been happening for a few years, is continuing in the 2025 admission season. According to ACPC data, 42 out of 139 degree engineering colleges in Gujarat have surrendered their management quota seats this year. Out of 34,798 total management quota seats, 11,844 seats (34%) have been handed over to ACPC for centralized online admissions.

Now, only 22,954 management quota seats are left with 97 self-financed colleges. In total, 79,676 engineering seats are available across 139 colleges this year. With 11,844 management quota seats added to 56,722 state quota seats, students now have more options in the centralized admission process.

This is a bigger increase compared to last year when 8,377 out of 28,026 management quota seats (around 30%) were surrendered to ACPC. In 2024, there were 72,790 seats across 138 colleges, with 53,127 seats under the state quota.

As per current rules, self-financed colleges can fill 50% of their seats through the management quota, while the other 50% are filled through ACPC. The committee also manages 25% of seats in 10 Centres of Excellence in the state.

Nilay Bhuptani, Member Secretary of ACPC, said that the rise in surrendered management quota seats shows that fewer Class 12 science students are choosing engineering as a career.

“At a time when self-financed institutes are struggling to attract students even through the centralised admission system, few colleges are willing to retain their entire management quota. The difficulty in enrolling students under this quota is real. Bringing these seats under the ACPC ensures that at least merit-based admissions take place,” he said.
