A tragic air crash unfolded in Gujarat on Thursday as an Air India Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner, headed to London, went down just two minutes after taking off from Ahmedabad Airport. The flight was carrying approximately 242 passengers at the time of the incident.
The ill-fated plane reportedly crashed into the doctors’ hostel building at BJ Medical College in Meghani Nagar.
Initial reports suggest that the aircraft hit the UG hostel mess, where many MBBS undergraduate students were present at the time. While the exact number of casualties is yet to be confirmed, social media posts indicate that several students may have lost their lives or suffered serious injuries in the tragic incident.
The Federation of All India Medical Association (FAIMA) expressed deep concern over the tragic incident. In a tweet, the association said, “We are deeply shocked about the news of AI ✈️, crashing in Ahmedabad.! News have become more gruesome after finding out that flight had crushed in BJMC, Hostel & many MBBS students have also been injured!!!! We are monitoring the situation closely & are ready for any help!”
The Air India flight was carrying 242 passengers when it crashed. Disturbing videos of the incident have surfaced on social media, showing thick black smoke billowing from the crash site. Several clips also capture the moment the plane struck the BJ Medical College building before crashing.
Footage from the scene shows rescue operations underway, with officials and locals helping to evacuate the injured from the hostel premises. Fire trucks and ambulances responded swiftly, and the injured were rushed to nearby hospitals for treatment.
