The Gujarat Centralised Admission System (GCAS), which was started to simplify undergraduate admissions for 13 state universities, has not shown good results for Gujarat University in the first phase.
Even though over 2.10 lakh students registered on the GCAS portal, less than 20% of the 66,000+ undergraduate seats at Gujarat University have been filled so far.
Official data shows that only 12,942 students have confirmed their admission to Gujarat University after the first three rounds. This is very low compared to the 58,000+ students who had chosen Gujarat University as one of their preferred options while registering.
At the same time, other state universities under GCAS have performed better. Here is the number of confirmed UG admissions after Round 3:
- Gujarat University: 12,942
- South Gujarat University: 27,362 seats filled
- Saurashtra University: 20,296
- North Gujarat University: 14,888
- Bhavnagar University: 4,484
- SP University: 5,874
- GTU: 1,237
- Junagadh University: 7,080
- MS University: 9,182
- Kutch University: 4,020
- Somnath Sanskrit University: 33
- IIT: 123
So far, 1.13 lakh students have confirmed their admissions out of 2.10 lakh registrations, which means a 53% confirmation rate across the state. However, only 24% of the total 4.7 lakh undergraduate seats have been filled, showing that many seats are still vacant.
According to education department officials, over 1.04 lakh new students have registered for the next rounds. This brings the total number of UG registrations to more than 3.14 lakh. These new registrations are expected to help fill more seats in the next four rounds of Phase 2. The fourth round of Phase 1 is still pending, and its results will be announced soon.
GCAS was launched in 2023 for all 15 state-run universities. Last year, 86.65% of Class 12 pass-outs — around 3.33 lakh students — took UG admissions through the system.
This year, the number of Class 12 pass-outs dropped by nearly 18,000, with 4,21,374 students passing. Around 50,000 students are expected to choose engineering and paramedical courses, and the government hopes about 3 lakh students will take UG courses through GCAS this year.
