Indian Railways is working on releasing the final passenger chart a full 24 hours before the departure of a train. Currently, the final reservation chart, which confirms the status of booked and waitlisted passengers, is prepared just four hours prior to departure from the train’s originating station.
This new proposal, if implemented successfully, will allow travellers to check their ticket status well in advance and plan alternatives accordingly. According to railway sources, the move is part of a larger effort to modernise railway operations, streamline services, and reduce last-minute rush and confusion at stations.
Why This Change Matters for Passengers
Currently, passengers—particularly those holding waitlisted tickets—are often left in suspense until just hours before departure to learn whether their seats are confirmed. With the reservation chart prepared only about four hours prior to a train’s departure, travellers have limited time to adjust plans if their tickets remain unconfirmed.
Railway officials say that shifting the chart preparation to 24 hours in advance would give waitlisted passengers greater clarity and more time to make informed decisions. This includes cancelling bookings, seeking alternative trains, or choosing different modes of transport.
The change would be especially helpful for passengers boarding from intermediate stations, who often face last-minute uncertainty about their travel status.
Pilot Project and Real-Time Synchronisation in Progress
A senior official from the Railway Board confirmed that Indian Railways is currently running pilot projects on select routes to test the feasibility of implementing a 24-hour reservation charting system.
The trials are aimed at examining how the system responds to dynamic bookings, cancellations, and whether real-time synchronisation can be maintained across various railway servers.
Currently, the first passenger chart is generated four hours prior to a train’s departure, followed by a second chart about 30 minutes before departure to account for last-minute adjustments. Under the proposed system, a single chart would be issued 24 hours in advance, backed by a real-time update mechanism to reflect any changes.
One of the key technical challenges lies in maintaining consistent passenger data across multiple stations and ticketing platforms. Any discrepancy could lead to serious issues in ticket validation, boarding, and seat allocation.
Step Toward Digitally Enhanced Travel
The move to release reservation charts 24 hours in advance is part of Indian Railways’ broader push toward digital transformation, aimed at improving passenger experience and streamlining operations.
If implemented successfully, the system could enable earlier notifications of seat allotments via SMS or email, easing the uncertainty for waitlisted passengers. Officials also believe it will help decongest stations and enable railway staff to manage berths and waiting lists more efficiently, with access to clearer and timely data.
