At least seven students from Gujarat have ranked in the top 100 of the JEE Advanced results, announced by IIT Kanpur on Monday.
JEE Advanced is the entrance exam for getting into the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) and other top engineering colleges in India.
The ‘Magnificent 7’ from Gujarat include Mohit Agarwal from Ahmedabad with All India Rank (AIR) 12, Aagam Shah (AIR 17), Mann Patel (AIR 43), Rishabh Iyer (AIR 48), Shiven Toshniwal (AIR 58), Kalp Shah (AIR 86), and Aadit Bhagade (AIR 94). The ranks are based on the total marks in Maths, Physics, and Chemistry.
This year, 1,80,422 students appeared for both JEE Advanced papers held on May 18, and 54,378 qualified. Among them, 9,404 are girls. Most top rankers are expected to join the popular Computer Science course at IIT Bombay. All except two of the Gujarat toppers are from Ahmedabad.
Mohit Agarwal
“I used to read for about 6-8 hours. I distributed equal time for all subjects and got doubts cleared immediately. I want to pursue research after completing my degree. I am hoping to get admission in IIT-Bombay or IISC-Bangalore. I scored low in mock tests but my parents took care of me and supported me thoroughly, ensuring I got adequate sleep.”
Agam Shah (Surat)
“My mother is a housewife and my father is in the textile industry. I have been preparing for JEE Advanced for two years. I want to do Computer Science at IIT Bombay. I used to study for 10-12 hours every day. I completely stopped using social media. I used WhatsApp only for studies and solved maximum questions in physics and maths.”
Mann Patel
“I started preparing for JEE in Class 10. There have been many ups and downs; I scored poorly in many tests but my parents and teachers motivated me. Apart from 5 hours of classes, I used to do self-study for 6 hours. Since I was weak in chemistry, I focused more on it. I want to pursue Computer Science from IIT-Bombay.”
Rishabh Iyer
“I studied for 10-12 hours a day, with one or two hours for recreation. I aimed for a spot in AIR top 50 and had been preparing for the last three years. I was always interested in math, so I chose engineering though my parents are from the medical field. My family wanted me to give my best and never insisted on a specific rank.”
Shiven Toshniwal
“I want to do computer science from IIT-Bombay. Class 12 is an important year as it is also the year for preparation of JEE. So being calm and confident is important while preparing. Ensure you study well, have a great peer group, understand teacher’s advice, do mock tests well and keep competitive spirit with friends. All of it helps in preparing well.”
Kalp Shah (Surat)
“My parents are doctors. I prepared for Mains and Advance for two years and stayed away from social media during this period. I used to study for 4-5 hours along with classes. When there were no classes, I studied for 10-12 hours. I paid special attention to getting cleared from the teachers first. After that, I focussed the most on practice.”
Aadit Bhagade
“After JEE- Mains, the focus shifted to JEE-Advance, with all doubts getting cleared at the Mains level. We had a group of friends to discuss mock tests, their results and how to improve scores. We focussed on whatever our teachers taught us. My parents are doctors but I have always been interested in studying CS and I am aiming to get into one of the top IITs with this score.”
