Women swimmers in Ahmedabad are not getting coaching at public pools even after paying fees because women instructors in the city are protesting.
On Saturday, the swimmers were unhappy because, due to a shortage of staff, they were assigned a male coach instead of a female one. The women swimmers strongly protested and refused to train with the male coach.
According to reports, part-time female swimming coaches are protesting over pending contract renewal and discrepancy in payment by the contractors. As a result, over 13 corporation-run swimming pools including Vasna, Kankaria, Ranip, CTM, Vadaj, and Odhav are operating without female coaches.
“The contract of the female coach is renewed every six months. However, after the recent contract ended on May 6, it has not yet been renewed,” said a councillor of Gomtipura.
According to reports, a woman who has worked as a swimming coach with AMC for more than 18 years earns only ₹9,000 per month. This is much less than the amount stated in her contract.
