WhatsApp will stop working on certain iPhones and Android devices starting June 1. Originally, the company planned to enforce this change in May 2025, but a slight delay gave users extra time to switch devices. So, why is this happening? This update is part of Meta’s regular software cycle, where WhatsApp raises its minimum system requirements to improve performance and security.

Business News

As per a media report, from tomorrow, WhatsApp will no longer support iPhones running iOS 15 or earlier versions, as well as Android devices running version 5.0 or older. Let’s take a look at which phones will be affected.

List of iPhones and Androids that will no longer support WhatsApp

— iPhone 5s
— iPhone 6
— iPhone 6 Plus
— iPhone 6s
— iPhone 6s Plus
— iPhone SE (1st gen)

— Samsung Galaxy S4
— Samsung Galaxy Note 3
— Sony Zperia Z1
— LG G2
— Huawei Ascend P6
— Moto G (1st Gen)
— Motorola Razr HD
— Moto E 2014

All the phones on the list are quite old. But before you think about replacing your phone because of this, make sure to check if your device is up-to-date. If your iPhone is running iOS 15.1 or later, or your Android is on version 5.1 or higher, WhatsApp will continue to work without any issues.

If you think your phone might be affected, don’t panic just yet. WhatsApp recommends backing up your chat history to your Google account before support ends. This will help you transfer all your conversations smoothly to a new device. To do this, open WhatsApp, go to Settings, tap on Chats, select Chat Backup, and follow the instructions. This simple step will make moving to a new phone much easier.

Security is the key reason behind this decision. Since Apple no longer provides software updates for these older iOS versions, those devices face growing security risks. Without regular security patches, users become more vulnerable to hacking and other threats. This is why WhatsApp is encouraging people to upgrade to newer devices and operating systems.

In recent months, WhatsApp has rolled out several updates to strengthen user privacy and protect personal data. One important new feature stops others from copying text, images, or videos from chats and group conversations, helping prevent sensitive content from being shared without permission. WhatsApp has also improved tools like chat lock, which lets users secure individual chats with a password, fingerprint, or Face ID. Additionally, the disappearing messages feature has been enhanced, giving users more control over how long their messages stay visible before they automatically delete.
