IMD Issues Rough Weather Alert for Arabian Sea; Fishermen Advised to Avoid Deep Sea from May 21–24

The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a weather advisory warning of potentially rough sea conditions in the Arabian Sea near the Maharashtra and Goa coasts between May 21 and May 24. According to the forecast, a low-pressure system is expected to form over the region beginning Wednesday, with the possibility of it intensifying and moving northward by Saturday.

The alert was shared by the Chief Minister’s Office (CMO) Maharashtra through its official social media channels. While the IMD has clarified that there is no immediate threat to coastal areas, it has cautioned that the sea will likely remain disturbed and turbulent, especially during the period from May 22 to 24.

Coastal districts including Mumbai, Palghar, Raigad, and Ratnagiri may experience heightened wave activity and choppy seas. Additionally, strong winds are predicted in offshore areas, posing risks to small fishing vessels and boats.

In response, the State Disaster Management Department has released a set of safety guidelines for fishermen and residents in coastal areas, urging them to stay off the deep sea and take precautionary steps to avoid accidents.

Safety Advisory for Fishermen (May 21–24):

  1. Stay updated with IMD’s official forecasts.
  2. Follow directives from local authorities and fishing cooperatives.
  3. Avoid all deep-sea fishing activities.
  4. Refrain from using small boats; remain close to the shore if fishing is necessary.
  5. Carry safety gear, including life jackets, radios, and emergency supplies.
  6. Shift boats and equipment to secure inland areas.
  7. Suspend fishing operations during periods of rough sea to ensure crew safety.

Authorities are monitoring the weather system closely and will issue updates as necessary. Fishermen and coastal communities are urged to prioritize safety and cooperate with all instructions issued by local disaster response units.
