Pet dog registrations in Ahmedabad have sharply increased over the past two days, following the shocking incident in which a Rottweiler attacked a four-month-old baby.
The dog involved was reportedly unregistered, prompting many pet owners to urgently comply with the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation’s (AMC) pet registration rules.
If pet dog owners fail to comply with the registration requirements, the AMC will initiate strict action against them. As per officials, the AMC may disconnect the water and drainage connections of households with unregistered pet dogs. Additionally, a notice will also be issued to non-compliant owners.
The AMC had launched a city-wide pet dog registration campaign earlier this year as part of its efforts to make Ahmedabad a rabies-free city. While the city is estimated to have nearly 50,000 pet dogs, only 5,548 dogs had been registered by 4,874 owners between January 1 and May 13.
However, on just two days May 14 and 15 pet dog registrations saw a sharp rise, with 330 dogs registered by 297 owners. This marks the highest two-day total since the registration drive began, compared to the usual 8 to 10 daily registrations over the past four months. In April alone, 305 dogs were registered.
According to AMC records, the most commonly registered breeds include German Shepherds, Labradors, Siberian Huskies, Pomeranians, and Golden Retrievers.
