In a major move to modernise India’s passport services, the Ministry of External Affairs launched the e-passport initiative under Passport Seva Programme (PSP) Version 2.0 on April 1, 2024. The pilot project is designed to boost security, simplify international travel, and safeguard passport holders’ data from tampering or duplication.
The e-passport blends the traditional paper passport with a secure electronic chip that stores personal and biometric details. This advanced technology represents a significant step forward in India’s drive towards secure, tech-enabled public services, offering stronger protection against fraud and enabling faster, more reliable identity verification.
What is an e-passport?
An e-passport, or electronic passport, is equipped with Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) technology. It contains an embedded chip and antenna within the passport’s cover, which securely stores the holder’s personal information and biometric data, such as a digital photograph. This helps in quicker and more reliable authentication during international travel.
You can identify an e-passport by a small gold symbol printed at the bottom of the front cover.
What are the key benefits of e-passports?
1. Enhanced security:
The digitally signed chip significantly reduces the risk of passport duplication, forgery, and identity theft.
1. Efficiency in international travel:
Immigration officials can quickly authenticate the passport using the chip, speeding up checks at borders.
2. Data protection:
The Public Key Infrastructure (PKI) ensures that sensitive data stored on the chip is encrypted and can’t be accessed or altered by unauthorised parties.
Where are e-passports available?
Currently, e-passports are being issued in 13 cities, including:
· Amritsar
· Bhubaneswar
· Chennai
· Delhi
· Goa
· Hyderabad
· Jaipur
· Jammu
· Nagpur
· Raipur
· Ranchi
The government plans to extend this service to all Passport Seva Kendras across the country by mid-2025.
Do existing passport holders need to upgrade?
No, there is no need for existing passport holders to switch to an e-passport. Traditional passports will remain valid until their expiry. The e-passport is currently being offered as an optional upgrade, with no immediate requirement for citizens to transition.
What’s next for the e-passport rollout?
The launch of the e-passport marks the beginning of a phased move towards a more secure and efficient passport system. As the initiative gradually expands nationwide, it is expected to simplify international travel for Indian citizens and reinforce the country’s commitment to advanced, tech-driven public services.
