The 18th edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL 2025) was indefinitely suspended on Friday, May 9, due to escalating tensions between India and Pakistan.
Earlier, BCCI Vice-President Rajiv Shukla stated that the board would decide the future of IPL 2025 after consulting with the central government.
Back in 2021, during the second wave of the Covid-19 pandemic, the BCCI had halted the IPL midway and later resumed it at an entirely different venue. However, this time, a change of venue may not be necessary, and the tournament could simply remain on hold for now.
However, with a packed international calendar for all teams in the remaining months of the year, the BCCI may struggle to find a suitable window to reschedule a tournament of IPL’s scale.
Uncertainty had been looming over the ongoing edition ever since Thursday’s match between Punjab Kings and Delhi Capitals in Dharamsala was halted midway due to air raid alerts in nearby cities like Jammu and Pathankot.
According to a media report, a BCCI official confirmed the suspension of the high-profile league, stating, “It does not look nice that cricket goes on while the country is at war.” The ongoing IPL 2025 season was originally scheduled to conclude on May 25 in Kolkata.
