Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Thursday night said that “intermittent sounds of blasts, probably heavy artillery,” could be heard in several areas of the Union Territory, indicating intensifying military activity along the border with Pakistan.
Taking to X (formerly Twitter), Abdullah urged residents of Jammu to remain indoors. “Stay off the streets, stay at home or at the nearest place you can comfortably stay at for the next few hours,” he wrote, adding, “Ignore rumours, don’t spread unsubstantiated or unverified stories — we will get through this together.”
As cross-border tensions rise in the aftermath of Operation Sindoor — India’s retaliatory strikes on terror camps in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK) — multiple sectors have reported signs of heightened military engagement.
Intense Military Movement Across Border States
In Punjab’s Amritsar, reports of intense air activity emerged late Thursday night, indicating a possible mobilisation of air assets in response to regional threats.
Meanwhile, in Jammu and Kashmir’s Rajouri sector, air defence systems were actively intercepting suspected Pakistani drones. An NDTV journalist present in the area confirmed the sighting of Indian air defence units neutralizing aerial threats.
The Uri sector in Baramulla also witnessed heavy shelling, intensifying fears of a prolonged cross-border confrontation. Locals reported hearing continuous exchanges of fire throughout the evening.
Drone Threats in Rajasthan
Further south, in Rajasthan’s Pokhran area, Indian air defence forces shot down multiple unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs). The drones are suspected to have originated from across the border. The region, home to several strategic defence installations, remains on high alert.
High Alert and Civilian Caution
With several fronts witnessing simultaneous military activity, authorities across affected states have issued advisories urging people to avoid unnecessary movement and to stay updated only through official channels.
The situation remains fluid, with air defence systems and border patrol units on constant watch. No official word has been issued yet on casualties or damages. However, the prevailing tone from leaders and officials suggests preparedness and a firm resolve to safeguard national security.
Further updates are expected as the situation unfolds.
