The University Grants Commission (UGC) has issued a strong warning after a fake notice spread false claims that all university exams in India were cancelled because of a “war-like situation.”
This fake notice, widely shared on social media, also wrongly advised students to go back home.
The clarification came shortly after India launched targeted airstrikes under Operation Sindoor, aimed at eliminating terrorist hideouts in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Jammu and Kashmir (PoJK).
These strikes followed the April 22 terror attack in Pahalgam, believed to have been orchestrated by members of Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM) and Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT).
Taking to X (formerly Twitter), the UGC clarified:
“A fabricated public notice is being circulated under the name of UGC, claiming that all exams are cancelled due to a war situation and advising students to return home. UGC confirms this notice is fake. There are no such directions from UGC.”
The commission emphasised that all official announcements will only be made via the UGC website and its verified social media handles. It also warned that spreading misinformation is a punishable offence under Indian law.
“Don’t fall prey to false information. Stay vigilant and refer only to official UGC sources,” the statement added.
Meanwhile, after Operation Sindoor, Pakistan broke the Ceasefire Agreement by firing artillery in the Bhimber Gali area of Jammu and Kashmir’s Poonch-Rajouri region.
In response, the Indian Army took controlled and carefully planned action, according to the Additional Directorate General of Public Information (ADG PI) on X.
