In response to a question, Kumar said the mock drill would not affect traffic. Officials at the city’s railway stations and airport also said their operations would not be disturbed.
Ahmedabad Collector Sujeet Kumar said on Tuesday, “We are doing a mock drill from 4 pm to 8:15 pm to prepare for emergencies like air strikes. This drill will help everyone people and the administration understand their duties during such situations.”
The Collector was speaking at a press conference a day before the civil mock drill, scheduled in several states of India, kicks off in Gujarat on Wednesday evening.
Kumar appealed to the public to turn off their lights voluntarily between 7.45 pm and 8.15 pm as part of this exercise. He also said that power distribution companies, including the Uttar Gujarat Vij Corporation Limited (UGVCL) and Torrent Power, would be asked to shut off the electricity distribution for half an hour.
He said the mock drill will be held at important points in Ahmedabad city and the larger district including tourist spots, major assembly points, power distribution premises, and vital installations. However, the exact points were yet to be decided as on Tuesday evening.
On the role of the public, the Collector said, “When the sirens go off, the public has been advised to stay indoors and take shelter instead of stepping out.”
Meanwhile, the administration is planning on evacuation and emergency measures, rescue efforts, transport facilities and medical stocks.
In reply to a question, Kumar said that traffic would not be affected by the mock drill.
Officials at both the railway stations and the airport in the city said the mock drill would not impact operations.
Around 1,900 Civil Defence volunteers, along with others, will take part in the mock drill in Ahmedabad district.
