The state government has set up the Somnath Urban Development Authority (SUDA) to carry out a major development plan for the Somnath temple.
A notification was issued this week by the urban development department to form SUDA. This new body will handle development work in and around the temple, including building a special corridor.
The project is being guided directly by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who is the head of the Somnath Temple Trust. The plan is similar to the recent upgrades at Kashi Vishwanath and Ujjain temples.
Reclaiming land, reimagining spaces
In preparation for the project, authorities have cleared more than 102 acres of government land near the temple.
They removed illegal encroachments to make way for development.
The project carries an estimated price tag of Rs 282 crore. The master plan covers both temple premises and surrounding areas.
The newly formed authority will implement tourism-based town planning across Veraval-Patan Municipality and 12 surrounding villages. SUDA replaces the now-dissolved Veraval-Patan Area Development Authority. Both Patan-Veraval and Sutrapada talukas now fall under SUDA’s jurisdiction.
Leadership and governance
SUDA comprises 12 members with the Gir Somnath Collector serving as chairman. Other members include representatives from various departments: the Tourism Department Secretary, the local District Development Officer, Regional Municipal Commissioner, and Chief Town Planner. The District Panchayat President, Municipal Engineer, and Resident Additional Collector as Member Secretary round out the body.
Regional development plan
SUDA will prepare and quickly implement special town planning schemes for the Somnath-Veraval-Patan area. These plans cover temple precincts, coastal spots, the lion safari in Sasan, and forest tourism. Nearby destinations like Diu, Dwarka and Porbandar are also included. The focus remains on creating pilgrim accommodation, recreation facilities, and smooth travel between tourist spots.
Temple renovations and new attractions
The master plan includes renovating both Ahilyabai temple and Mata Parvati temple. A 1.48-km promenade will stretch along the sea coast. It will feature landscaping, children’s play areas, ancient religious paintings, and decorative lighting.
Several new projects are in the works. These include a shopping complex, heritage walk, and museum. Plans also call for a Geeta temple, riverfront at Triveni Sangam, and an Eco-Village Haat. The Haat aims to showcase local art, craft and cuisine.
A major highlight will be a museum showcasing Somnath’s rich history and heritage. It will display dismantled parts of old temples and sculptures reflecting the Nagar style of temple architecture.
