The demolition drive at Chandola may now finally allow the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation to execute its redevelopment and beautification plans for the city’s largest lake.
The civic body had floated tenders for the two-phase redevelopment in 2024, but progress has been slow. Until last week, only cleaning and work on the lake’s outer periphery had been initiated.
The lake, originally spanning 10.96 lakh square metres, has been reduced by 1.10 lakh sq m due to encroachments. Additionally, it has been used as a dumping ground by factories in Pirana.
It took AMC 23 years to complete the acquisition of the lake, which was finally completed in 2024. Following this, the civic body issued a tender for a redevelopment project worth around Rs 25 crore. In the first phase, the focus is on developing the lake’s outer periphery, while the second phase includes building 10 multi-storeyed towers to replace existing slums. The project is part of a government initiative aimed at providing housing for slum dwellers and enhancing the beauty of city lakes.
