John Abraham’s political drama The Diplomat is all set to make its digital debut. As per recent reports, the film will premiere on Netflix on May 9, 2025, although an official confirmation from either the streaming platform or the production team is still awaited. Despite the lack of formal announcements, anticipation for the film’s OTT release is already gaining momentum among fans.
Directed against the backdrop of real-world political events, The Diplomat first hit theatres on March 14, 2025. Alongside Abraham, the film features Sadia Khateeb in a key role and promises a deep dive into the world of diplomacy, highlighting the personal and professional struggles faced by diplomats in high-pressure scenarios.
In an earlier conversation with Pinkvilla, John Abraham opened up about the initial hurdles the project faced in the digital space. He revealed that multiple streaming services initially passed on The Diplomat. “The loss of faith happens from the studio…when some OTT channels refused The Diplomat because they didn’t find it great. They rejected the film; they threw it out,” Abraham shared candidly. However, he added that the film’s eventual success surpassed all expectations, stating, “In the case of The Diplomat, we proved the studio wrong, the OTTs wrong, and everyone wrong.”
Known for films like Madras Cafe and Batla House, which also drew inspiration from true events, Abraham continues to explore real-life narratives through The Diplomat. The film sees him portray J.P. Singh, an Indian diplomat, and sheds light on pivotal diplomatic missions that significantly impacted India’s international relations during critical global periods.
Blending political intrigue, strategy, and personal drama, The Diplomat promises to offer a gripping portrayal of the often-unseen world of diplomacy. Its upcoming arrival on Netflix is poised to further expand John Abraham’s body of work rooted in true stories and high-stakes storytelling.
