The Australian High Commission in New Delhi has denied reports suggesting that some Australian educational institutions are banning or restricting student applications from certain Indian states.
“There is no ban or restriction on student applications from specific Indian states,” said a spokesperson from the Australian High Commission, emphasizing that Indian students are an important part of Australia’s international education landscape.
Currently, over 125,000 Indian students are studying in Australia, making them the second-largest group of international students in the country. The spokesperson also highlighted the strong educational ties between India and Australia, stating, “Australia deeply values Indian students and welcomes their contribution to both our classrooms and society.”
Responding to questions about visa policies, Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal clarified that immigration decisions are the sovereign right of the host country. “Visa matters are sovereign. It is Australia’s prerogative to issue visas as it sees fit,” he said during a weekly press briefing.
In a separate development, Australian Opposition Leader Peter Dutton has proposed major cuts to international student numbers as part of broader migration reforms. He announced plans to cap student intake and reduce permanent migration by 25%, aiming to address Australia’s housing shortage.
