The Indian government has raised LPG cylinder prices by Rs 50 for all users, including those under the Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana (PMUY). This is the first price hike for Ujjwala beneficiaries after a long period of subsidy support, despite rising global energy prices.
The new LPG prices will be effective from Tuesday, April 9, 2025. Ujjwala scheme users, who were paying ₹503 per cylinder in February, will now pay ₹553. Non-Ujjwala users will also see a ₹50 increase in the retail price.
This hike comes at a time when the number of Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana (PMUY) beneficiaries has crossed 10.33 crore, out of a total of 32.94 crore active domestic LPG connections in India as of March 1, 2025.
The Oil Ministry has justified the price hike, pointing to a 63% rise in global LPG prices—from $385 per metric ton in July 2023 to $629 in February 2025. Despite this increase, officials said oil companies have been bearing most of the cost, leading to a total loss of over ₹41,000 crore in the current financial year.
The price revision also comes after the government approved the fourth phase of the Ujjwala scheme in October 2024. However, over 26 lakh applications under the scheme are still pending across the country.
