IPL boosts Surat’s textile industry biz with ₹70 cr boost

The Indian Premier League (IPL), has not only brought excitement to the fans but has also provided a massive business boost to Surat’s textile industry, generating over ₹70 crore in revenue.

Surat plays a crucial role in manufacturing the fabric used for IPL team jerseys, track pants, and flags. The fabric for these jerseys is specially designed with lightweight, dry-fit, and UV-protected materials, ensuring flexibility and comfort for the players.

Earlier, this fabric was imported from China, but after changes in government policies, Surat’s textile industry has taken over production, benefiting local businesses.

Additionally, the flags of different IPL teams are also manufactured in Surat using recycled plastic waste. Discarded plastic bottles and glasses are collected, processed, and converted into fabric, which is then used to make team flags. Surat-based entrepreneurs have mastered the “waste-to-best” concept, creating a thriving market out of recycled materials.

Pravin, a Surat-based mill owner in Pandesara, stated, “Surat is a place that finds business opportunities in everything. When it comes to IPL, being India’s textile hub, Surat never stays behind. I have been making flags for the past four years, including for the T20 World Cup. These flags can also be recycled and reused for future events.”

With the government’s import restrictions on Chinese fabric, Surat’s textile industry has flourished, producing over 835 tons of fabric that was previously imported.

This shift has helped local manufacturers expand their businesses and generate revenue during the IPL season.
