law student from Ahmedabad experienced a shocking incident when a clerical error turned his Rs 500 fine for not wearing a helmet into a massive Rs 10,00,500 penalty.
The error occurred when Anil Hadiya, who was caught riding his bike without a helmet at the Shantipura traffic circle in April, 2024, discovered the inflated fine upon receiving a court summons.
The initial fine of Rs 500 was mistakenly recorded as Rs 10,00,500, causing great distress for Anil, a fourth-semester law student whose father is a small businessman.
“How will I and my family pay this amount?” Anil exclaimed, worried about the financial burden.
Anil approached the Metropolitan Court and the police commissioner’s office, accompanied by social activist Harshad Patel. The police admitted the error, with Joint Commissioner of Police (Traffic) NN Chaudhary stating, “There must have been some error during the entry in the challan sent to the court after 90 days. We will inform the court and get it corrected.”
An investigation is underway to determine the source of the mistake. Anil hopes the court and police will rectify the mistake to avoid unnecessary strain on his studies and family. The case has sparked discussions on social media about traffic rule compliance and system accountability
