Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) has announced that from the upcoming academic session, seven municipal schools, one in each of the city’s seven zones will extend their offerings to include standards 9 and 10.
This initiative ensures that students can now receive free education from pre-primary (Balvatika) through standard 10, aiming to reduce dropout rates and alleviate financial burdens on economically weaker and middle-class families.
Currently, AMC oversees over 400 schools that provide education up to standard 8 and serve approximately 1.70 lakh students. Upon completing standard 8, many students face the prospect of enrolling in private schools with higher fees or granted schools with nominal charges. The introduction of secondary classes in select municipal schools addresses this gap, offering students free education alongside benefits such as complimentary textbooks and uniforms.
School Board Chairman highlighted that this expansion will commence with seven schools across the city’s zones, with future plans to extend secondary education to additional municipal schools based on resource availability and directives from the board.
