veteran actor Deb Mukherjee, father of filmmaker Ayan Mukerji and father-in-law of director Ashutosh Gowariker, passed away at 83 on March 14. The actor was battling health issues for months.
Deb Mukherjee’s spokesperson informed Zoom that he died due to age-related ailments. His last rites will be held at Pawan Hans Crematorium in Juhu, Mumbai today at 4 pm.
The actor was the prominent organizer behind the popular North Bombay Durga Puja event, which attracts celebrity attendees like Kajol, Rani Mukerji, Rupali Ganguly, and Tanishaa every year.
However, several Bollywood celebrities including Kajol, Ajay Devgn, Ranbir Kapoor, Alia Bhatt, Tanishaa, Rani Mukerji, Tanuja, Hrithik Roshan, Sidharth Malhotra, Deepika Padukone, Ranveer Singh among others are expected to attend the late actor’s last rite today in Mumbai.
Deb Mukherjee has been in Bollywood for several years. He had a successful acting career, appearing in numerous Bollywood films, including Aansoo Ban Gaye Phool, Abhinetri, Do Aankhen, Baaton Baaton Mein, Kaminey, and Gudgudee, among others. However, he was mostly known for his roles in films like Jo Jeeta Wohi Sikandar and Adhikar.
For the unaware, Deb Mukherjee’s family boasts a talented lineup of actresses, including his nieces Kajol and Tanisha, as well as Rani Mukerji and Sharbani Mukherjee.
Deb Mukherjee belonged to the renowned Mukherjee family, which has strong ties to the Indian film industry. He was the younger brother of actor Joy Mukherjee and filmmaker Shomu Mukherjee, who was married to actress Tanuja, making Deb the uncle of Kajol and Tanishaa. His son, Ayan Mukerji, is a successful director known for films like Wake Up Sid, Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani, and Brahmāstra.
