Ahmedabad’s Sundarvan Mini Zoo unveils new aquarium, featuring native and exotic fishes

Ahmedabad’s Sundarvan Nature Discovery Centre and Mini Zoo has inaugurated a new aquarium, offering visitors a glimpse into the fascinating world of native and exotic fish species. The aquarium, featuring over 20 species of freshwater fishes, aims to provide an interactive learning experience about aquatic ecosystems and their preservation.

Among the species on display are the Albino Tiger Oscar, Blood Red Parrot Cichlid, Sucker Fish, Blue Kadango, and Blue Dolphin Cichlid, offering visitors a glimpse into the fascinating world beneath the water’s surface.

Sureshbabu, Senior Programme Coordinator at Sundarvan, shared that the project is part of a corporate social responsibility (CSR) initiative, with a special focus on local fish species such as Ghol and Indian carps like Rohu, Katla, and Mrigal. A key highlight of the aquarium is an open-to-sky pond, designed to let visitors observe fish activity from both above and below the water, making for a truly immersive experience.

In a unique approach to education, Sundarvan has moved away from traditional species labels. The space instead encourages visitors to engage in hands-on activities to identify fishes and learn more about their habitats. This interactive setup aligns with the centre’s mission to promote curiosity and awareness about biodiversity.
