Thai Airways and AirAsia ban power bank usage during flights

Thai Airways and AirAsia have introduced stricter regulations on power bank usage following an increase in cabin fire incidents.

Starting March 15, Thai Airways will enforce a complete ban on using power banks during flights. However, passengers can still carry them in their hand luggage, provided they comply with capacity limits set by the Civil Aviation Authority of Thailand (CAAT). These rules align with ICAO and IATA guidelines, which prohibit storing power banks in checked baggage due to the fire risk posed by lithium batteries.

“For the safety of all passengers, the use and charging of power banks (portable batteries) will not be permitted at any time during the flight. This regulation will take effect from March 15, 2025. We appreciate your cooperation in ensuring a safe and comfortable journey for everyone onboard,” Thai Airways said in public announcement.

The decision follows similar measures by international airlines in South Korea and Taiwan, which have restricted in-flight charging and overhead storage of power banks.

Meanwhile, AirAsia has also banned the use of power banks for charging devices during flights. The airline mandates that power banks must be carried in hand luggage, properly labeled, in good condition, and compliant with IATA safety standards.
