Responding to a question in the Gujarat Legislative Assembly regarding the total number of M.D. (Doctor of Medicine) and M.S. (Master of Surgery) seats in the state’s medical colleges and the increase over the last two years, Health Minister Rushikesh Patel stated that currently, 2,044 M.D. and 932 M.S. seats are available in the state’s medical colleges. He added that 446 M.D. and 211 M.S. seats have been added in the last two years.
Providing further details on postgraduate (P.G.) seats in medical colleges, he said that Gujarat has 2,044 P.G. degree (M.D. – 3 years) seats recognized by the National Medical Commission (NMC), Government of India, along with 932 P.G. degree (M.S. – 3 years) seats. Additionally, there are 124 super specialty (D.M./M.Ch. – 3 years) seats and 39 P.G. diploma (2 years) seats, bringing the total to 3,139.
Further, Gujarat has 148 seats for DNB (Diplomate of National Board) Specialty (3 years), 76 seats for DNB Super Specialty (3 years), and 58 seats for DNB Diploma (2 years), totaling 282. Additionally, 298 seats are available under the CPS (College of Physicians and Surgeons, Mumbai) Diploma (2 years).
Thus, a total of 3,719 postgraduate seats are currently available in the state.
The minister also mentioned that various institutions in Gujarat have applied to the NMC for an estimated 450 undergraduate (U.G.) seats and 1,011 postgraduate (P.G.) seats, for which the state government has issued essentiality certificates. He emphasized that, for the first time in Gujarat’s medical history, such a significant increase in seats will be seen in the near future, as per the official statement.
At present, there are a total of 41 medical colleges in the state. Of these, 6 are government-run, 13 are managed by the Gujarat Medical Education and Research Society, 3 are operated by municipal corporations, 1 is an AIIMS, and 18 are self-financed colleges.
