The Amdavad Municipal Corporation (AMC) is set to make public sanitation more inclusive by building toilets that cater specifically to the third gender.
The initiative is a part of the civic body’s broader efforts to improve public infrastructure, will see the addition of dedicated sections for transgender individuals in the to-be constructed aspirational toilets across the city.
The AMC has appointed a consultant to develop 20 aspirational toilets in various parts of the city. The toilet blocks will have sections for men, women and those who belong to the third gender, and will feature the appropriate signage.
The move following various court judgments that mandate separate sections for the third gender in public toilets will ensure accessibility while maintaining privacy and safety.
