A massive fire erupted at the Shivshakti Textile Market in Surat on Tuesday, claiming one life due to burns and suffocation. The fire initially broke out in the market’s basement but was thought to be under control after cooling operations were carried out by the fire brigade. However, it reignited on Wednesday morning, spreading rapidly through the building.
The blaze, which first started on Tuesday evening, flared up again at approximately 7:30 am on Wednesday, engulfing a significant portion of the market. Within an hour, flames had spread across multiple floors, affecting 150 to 200 shops. Despite the deployment of multiple fire tenders and firefighting units, the fire remained uncontrollable as of 6:30 pm on Wednesday. By late evening, a total of 853 shops had been affected, with many completely destroyed.
