The police have launched ‘SHASTRA’ (Sharir Sambandhi Tras Rokva Abhiyan), a special action plan to tighten security in risk-prone areas.
A detailed study of e-GujCop crime data showed that 33 police stations in these four cities report the highest number of crimes. The worst-hit areas include 12 police stations in Ahmedabad, 9 in Surat, 7 in Vadodara, and 5 in Rajkot.
To tackle the surge in evening crimes, police teams will be deployed between 6PM and midnight to ensure stronger surveillance during these hours. Roll calls at affected police stations will now happen at 6PM instead of 8PM to put officers on the ground earlier.
Under the SHASTRA project, the police will increase patrolling in sensitive areas. Raids on illegal activities will be intensified, and stricter vehicle checks and roadblocks will be set up to monitor movement in high-risk zones. Officers will also closely monitor suspicious individuals, take legal action under Section 135 of the Gujarat Police Act whenever necessary. With enhanced police vigilance, the initiative aims to make the streets safer after dark.
