To maintain uniformity across all birth and death registration units in Gujarat, the Deputy Chief Registrar of the Government of Gujarat has issued a circular directing that names in birth and death certificates be written in the following order: first name, middle name, and last name (surname).
Until now, in the absence of such a guideline, individuals were free to write their first name or surname in any order on documents such as birth and death certificates and Aadhaar cards. This inconsistency caused difficulties for the government in updating IDs, generating links, and handling various administrative matters.
To prevent such issues, the new directive mandates that in birth and death certificates, as well as Aadhaar cards, a person’s name should be written in the order of first name, father’s name, and surname. Similarly, in the columns for the child’s father and mother, the first name should be written first, followed by the middle name and lastly the surname.
The Deputy Chief Registrar has also ordered that this naming convention be followed for death certificates. Additionally, since the names of the child, his father, and surname, as well as the names of the grandparents and, in the case of the mother, her father’s name, are also included in the Aadhaar card, clarification has been provided on this matter. It has been stated that the same pattern must be followed in the Aadhaar card as well.
People with Aadhaar cards issued under the old system are not required to make any immediate changes. However, any future updates or modifications to the Aadhaar card must comply with the new format. Following this government directive, all newly issued Aadhaar cards will list names in the order of first name, father’s name, and surname. Likewise, the Deputy Chief Registrar has issued a circular instructing the immediate implementation of this system for birth and death registrations.
