Gujarat’s railway network is set for a massive transformation with a record Rs 17,155-crore allocation in the Union Budget 2025–26, a sharp jump from the Rs 589 crore annual average between 2009 and 2014. As many as 87 stations across the state are set for a revamp, with key infrastructure projects already underway.
Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw shared these details on Monday, highlighting the rapid progress of rail projects in the state over the past decade. Since 2014, Gujarat has added 2,739 km of new railway tracks—more than the entire rail network of Denmark. The state has also electrified 3,144 km of rail lines, achieving 97 per cent electrification.
Ahmedabad, the biggest beneficiary, has already invested Rs 2,379 crore for its station redevelopment. The existing south station building has been dismantled and foundation work for the new multi-modal transit hub (MMTH) building is in progress. Construction of the new parcel building is also underway.
Other stations undergoing work include Gandhinagar Capital, Sabarmati, Surat, Somnath and Udhna and New Bhuj.
