The number of class 10 students opting for standard maths has been on the decline.
With fewer Gujarat Board students choosing for Standard Mathematics, the more difficult option, in Class 10 Boards, there is a proposal to have separate textbooks for standard and basic mathematics. Members of the board proposed this modification to the education minister during a meeting on Friday at the Vidya Samiksha Kendra in Gandhinagar.
Those who attended the meeting said the minister later asked the board and experts to consider the suggestion and initiate a process to formulate two different sets of mathematics books. At present, Class 10 students study from the same textbook but can opt for either- Standard or Basic Mathematics-in the board exams.
JV Patel, a member in the education board said that during the meeting there was a discussion on the low number of students in Mathematics Standard in Class 10. “Therefore based on the suggestions received from various unions, a presentation was made to have two separate text books for Mathematics. In the old days, arithmetic and algebra were kept separate, in the same way, it was suggested that the books for Mathematics Standard and Basic be separate. The Education Department will take its decision on the matter after examining various aspests of the suggestion,” he said
