The Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) plans to install advanced sensory devices at 20 underpasses with a view to monitoring water levels and preventing hazardous situations during monsoon seasons.
The sensors are equipped with boom barriers, lidar sensors, CCTV cameras, and operating software. The project aims to enhance real-time monitoring of water levels.
A pilot project has already been implemented at the Akhbarnagar underpass, where the system automatically closes boom barriers when water levels rise above 60 centimetres. This precautionary measure ensures that citizens are stopped from entering underpasses during waterlogging. This same technology device will be installed in 19 underpasses across the city.
The water detection sensors will continuously assess the water levels, sending updates to a control room every 10 seconds. If the water level exceeds the 60-centimetre limit, the boom barriers will close automatically. Standing committee chairman Devang Dani highlighted ongoing efforts to improve stormwater drainage systems. These include installation of new stormwater lines, and the repair and upgrading of drainage infrastructure across various zones of the city.
