At least 10 people were feared dead after a stampede occurred at Maha Kumbh in Prayagraj early on Wednesday. The incident happened when a barrier broke as tens of thousands of people thronged the Triveni Sangam on the occasion of Mauni Amavasya, the day of ‘second Shahi Snan’.
Calling for immediate support measures, Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke to Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath about the situation and reviewed the developments.
Ambulances were rushed to the spot and the injured were shifted to a makeshift hospital in Sector 2 of Kumbh. The Akhara Parishad (council) announced that the Amrit Snan has been cancelled for today following the stampede.
Authorities appealed to the devotees to vacate the spot after taking a dip in the Sangam.
Although the number of people injured is not yet confirmed, witnesses told India Today TV that at least 30 to 40 people might have been injured in the incident.
