A man, in his fifties, lost his left leg while trying to board a train at Rajkot railway station on Tuesday, said the police, adding he was saved due to the timely intervention of a Government Railway Police (GRP) Constable.
The incident took place when the man was attempting to board the Mumbai Central-Hapa Duronto Express, said officials.
According to the GRP officials, the incident took place between 9:30 and 9:40 am on Tuesday when the Duronto Express – had halted at Rajkot railway station – on its way to Hapa station, its last stop, in Jamnagar district of Gujarat. Officials told The Indian Express that the man had got down from the train to purchase some snacks when it started moving again. In the rush to board, the man tried to get into the moving train but lost his balance and fell in the gap between the train and the platform, said the officials.

The man was dragged for several metres when GRP Constable Jayesh Nathabhai noticed him and rushed to save him. Constable Jayesh told The Indian Express, “I noticed the man being dragged along with the train following which I tried to pull him out. I held on to his hands and did manage to pull him free, however, one of his legs was crushed under the wheel of the train”. According to the Railway Protection Force (RPF) officials, the man was immediately rushed to the hospital. “The man lost his left leg from the knee down but survived. He is undergoing treatment at a local hospital,” said an official.
