On Sunday night at 11:30 pm, over 40 passengers on SpiceJet flight SG-016 from Dubai to Ahmedabad were left stranded as their luggage was left behind in Dubai. The flight landed at Ahmedabad Airport, but around 40 passengers were informed that their luggage had to be left behind due to safety concerns related to excess fuel and luggage on the flight. The pilot reportedly made the decision to leave the luggage in Dubai.
When a plane carries more fuel, it has less space available for luggage because the added weight of the extra fuel takes up a portion of the plane’s maximum payload capacity, meaning less room for passengers’ belongings; essentially, the heavier the plane, the less cargo it can carry.
Passengers expressed their frustration and anger at the situation, especially as many had purchased gifts for their families for the upcoming Uttarayan festival. They complained about the lack of communication and assistance from SpiceJet staff. The helpline number provided for inquiries and follow-ups went unanswered, leaving passengers with no information about their luggage.
SpiceJet staff assured passengers that their luggage would be brought on the next flight. However, passengers were left to fend for themselves without their belongings.
