Narmada, Banaskantha, Jamnagar, Surendranagar, and Morbi are among the other areas with significant wolf populations, according to the Indian Wolf Atlas.
Gujarat has 222 wolves dispersed over 13 districts, with Bhavnagar claiming the largest number (80). The Gujarat Forest Department conducted the Wolf Population Survey 2023, which yielded these results.
The other districts with the high number of wolf population are Narmada (39) Banaskantha (36), Surendranagar (18), and 12 each in Jamnagar and Morbi. Additionally, Kutch has nine wolves while the animal’s presence was also noted in Porbandar, Mehsana, Navsari, Patan, Aravalli, and Surat districts as well.
More details about this wild animal were recorded in The Atlas of Indian Wolf Habitats in Gujarat jointly prepared by the ‘GEFR’ Foundation and the Gujarat Forest Department. The atlas, launched on ‘Good Governance Day, December 25 2024, by Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel in the presence of the Forest Minister and senior officials also identifies suitable habitats for wolves in Gujarat. The initiative aims to con serve the Indian wolt, a keystone species essential for maintaining ecological balarice and agricultural sustain ability. A release from the department said prioritising the conservation of these habitats will not only protect wolves but also protect other wildlife.
