Customs officials at Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International (SVPI) Airport arrested a woman and a man on Wednesday for allegedly smuggling gold worth approximately ₹48 lakh. The arrests involved a man arriving from Jeddah and a woman arriving from Abu Dhabi. It was also learnt that the woman was carrying 1,400 cigarettes.
The woman, travelling from Abu Dhabi, was found with 18-carat gold jewellery valued at ₹34 lakh and 1,400 cigarettes. In a separate case, a passenger arriving from Jeddah was caught with a rhodium-coated gold chain worth ₹14 lakh, which had initially evaded detection by customs X-ray machines due to its coating.
