The Gujarat government has hatched a plan to leverage AI to catch criminals and maintain peace on the streets. In the initial phase, all CCTV cameras in police stations across the state will be repaired and linked to district control rooms. A dedicated team at each station will monitor the cameras and take action as needed.
A high-level committee comprising officials from the home, urban development and transport departments will be formed to implement the project. All three departments have installed CCTVs in their respective areas, and these will be coordinated for maximum effectiveness.
The home department is currently compiling data and pictures of criminals from across the state, going back approximately 10 years, a senior official revealed.
With the aid of artificial intelligence, the latest pictures of criminals will be fed into the system, enabling cops to identify them more easily.
The police have old pictures of many people. The software being developed will create updated images of criminals. If any person attempts to flee after committing a crime, the CCTV will pinpoint their location, and their picture will automatically pop up, allowing cops to apprehend them.
Police officers will be trained to use the software to help nab criminals and maintain law and order. 24/7 monitoring of cameras at police stations will be implemented.
The system will be made so effective that a person committing a crime is caught within 4-5 hours. The image of the person will pop up across CCTVs in the state, making it easy to nab them. This will definitely reduce the crime rate.
