The Ahmedabad Traffic Police and the Regional Transport Office (RTO) have booked 152 car owners in two days for installing high-intensity aftermarket white LED headlamps. Each of the owners was fined Rs1000 as part of a crackdown against cars fitted with such aftermarket white LED headlamps.
The drive, which started on Monday evening, is aimed at curbing the rising number of complaints about such modifications. Traffic police sources said there will be no let-up in their efforts to target vehicles equipped with these aftermarket LED headlamps or other flashy lights. The crackdown follows a directive issued by the Gujarat Transport Department highlighting the dangers of strong white LED lamps. The department had received multiple complaints about the adverse effects of these lights, including the risk of blinding oncoming drivers, leading to accidents on highways and city roads.
Four teams of the RTO are also involved in the drive which aligns with the provisions of the Motor Vehicle Act prohibiting the installation of such lights. The law under Section 177 of the Motor Vehicle Act states that any vehicle that fails to comply with the standards set out in the Act or poses a danger to public safety can be penalized.
