The property owners in west zone owe the civic body tax dues of Rs 2.26 crore
The Ahmedabad Municipal T Corporation (AMC) will auction 22 commercial properties in the western zone of the city to recover property tax due from the owners. These properties, located primarily in the Navrangpura area near Stadium, Ashram Road, CG Road, and Mitakhali, owe a total of Rs2.26 crore in unpaid property taxes.
The AMC decided on the auction after the property owners, despite repeated reminders, failed to pay taxes.
Municipal Commissioner M. Thennarasan, earlier during a review of the tax collection process, highlighted the growing backlog of unpaid taxes, especially from commercial properties. He also emphasised the need for stringent measures, including property seizures, auctioning, and the issuance of encumbrance notes, to ensure timely tax recovery. Following these directives, the tax officials have carried out regular campaigns to seal and auction properties with substantial outstanding dues since the start of the current financial year.
It should be noted that despite these measures, many property owners, particularly those with commercial properties, did not attempt to settle their dues for several years resulting in huge tax arrears. Sources said property owners also have the option to raise objections to tax assessments or bills but many of these owners have failed to do so and continue to avoid payment without any valid reasons.
In light of this, a final warning was issued to the owners of these 22 properties by the West Zone Tax Department informing them that their properties will be seized and auctioned to collect outstanding tax amounting to Rs2.26 crore.
