The government runs several schemes across the country, under which free ration is provided to low-income families holding ration card
Through a programme initiated during the Covid-19 pandemic, around 80 crore people in the country are receiving free rations. While this scheme is intended for the underprivileged, many ineligible individuals are still using ration cards to claim these benefits. This practice deprives those who are more in need.
If you are among those misusing this provision, be cautious – the government is re-verifying ration card holders nationwide. If found ineligible, you may face fines or even imprisonment.
Government Criteria for Ration Card Ineligibility
If you own a four-wheeler like a car or tractor, you are not eligible to hold a ration card. Households with items such as refrigerators or air conditioners are also disqualified. Additionally, if your annual income exceeds Rs 2 lakh in rural areas or Rs 3 lakh in urban areas, you do not qualify.
If any household member holds a government job, the entire family is considered ineligible for a ration card. Similarly, those who pay income tax or use luxury items are not qualified to receive ration benefits. It’s advisable to surrender your ration card if these apply to you.
According to the logistics department rules, if you own a property (house, building, or land) exceeding 100 square yards, you are not eligible for a ration card.
In such cases, it is better to return your ration card to the district logistics department and have your name removed. Failure to do so may lead to substantial fines or even jail time if the government identifies your case during its investigation
