The National Testing Agency (NTA) has announced that a High-Powered Expert Committee, formed on the instructions of the Supreme Court of India, is currently reviewing potential changes to the NEET UG 2025 exam pattern
This information was revealed after an RTI (Right to Information) request filed by activist Dr. Vivek Pandey, who sought clarity on discussions held in July and August 2024 regarding possible alterations to the NEET 2025 exam pattern.
In his RTI application, Dr. Pandey asked for official records of these meetings, specifically requesting the “details of minutes of meeting held in the month of July & August 2024 regarding the NEET 2024 & NEET 2025 Exam.”
The response from the Central Public Information Officer (CPIO), however, indicated that the information was “not available in the form you desire. Hence, this information could not be furnished to you.”
Emphasis on Transparency
Unconvinced by the initial reply, Dr. Pandey submitted a first appeal, requesting the information in any form available. He stressed the importance of transparency, citing Section 20(1) of the RTI Act 2005, which outlines penalties for providing incomplete or misleading information.
The penalty clause enforces a fine of ?250 per day until the information is furnished, up to a maximum of ?25,000.
Responding to this appeal, the NTA stated, “The reply of the CPIO is adequate, the information as asked by you is not available and hence not furnished. Further, on the directions of the Honorable Supreme Court of India, the Government has constituted a High-Powered Expert Committee whose report is still awaited.”
NEET Aspirants’ Concerns Over Potential Changes
This response has raised concerns among NEET UG aspirants, as any adjustments to the exam pattern could impact millions of students. As one of India’s most important entrance exams for medical courses, NEET UG plays a critical role in shaping students’ academic futures. Even minor changes to the format could significantly influence how students prepare and approach the test.
Dr. Pandey shared his concerns publicly, posting on X (formerly Twitter), “I had filed an RTI asking for the minutes of the meeting regarding any potential changes in the #NEET 2025 exam pattern. #NTA stated that, as per the directions of the SC of India, a High-Powered Expert Committee has been formed & report is still awaited.”
Role of the High-Powered Committee
The High-Powered Committee was formed after allegations of irregularities in the NEET UG 2024 exam surfaced.
While the Supreme Court found no systemic breach in the 2024 exam, it directed the Committee to examine the robustness of the examination process and suggest any changes necessary to enhance fairness and transparency.
The Committee’s original deadline for submitting its report was set for September 30, 2024. However, the Union Government requested a three-week extension, shifting the deadline to October 21, 2024.
As per recent updates, the Committee has finalised its report and recommendations, which are expected to be submitted to the Supreme Court shortly.
Changes in JEE Main 2025: Reduced Flexibility in Optional Questions
Recently, the JEE Main 2025 exam pattern saw a notable shift, with the NTA reducing the number of optional questions from 10 to just 5, thereby limiting the previous flexibility offered to students. This move is part of the NTA’s efforts to standardise the examination process across the board.
The changes in JEE Main have raised concerns among NEET UG aspirants, as many fear similar alterations could be introduced for the NEET UG 2025 exam.
Awaiting the Committee’s Findings
As the High-Powered Expert Committee’s report is awaited, NEET aspirants are urged to continue their preparation based on the current exam format, while keeping a close eye on any forthcoming announcements from the NTA or the Supreme Court. The Committee’s findings will ultimately determine whether significant changes to the NEET UG 2025 exam pattern will be implemented.
