The Gujarat government has taken the initiative to improve traffic management in four major municipal corporations: Ahmedabad, Vadodara, Rajkot, and Surat. This project aims to streamline traffic flow and address the persistent issue of stray cattle on the roads.
The home department has issued an official circular outlining the collaborative role of municipal and police administrations in tackling traffic problems.
Joint committees comprising police and municipal commissioners will formulate both long-term and short-term solutions, with monthly review meetings to monitor progress.
Committees of deputy municipal commissioners and deputy police commissioners (traffic) will meet every fortnight to present reports to their respective commissioners.
The home department has identified five key areas for effective traffic solutions: Engineering, Enforcement, Encouragement, Education, and Evaluation. City engineers from each municipal corporation will work in tandem with the teams to devise solutions for traffic congestion, stray cattle, and accidents. The traffic-related work of all four cities will be reviewed every two months by ACS (Home) & ACS (urban development).
Effective coordination between civic and police authorities is necessary to address the growing traffic challenges in the cities.
Tailored solutions
Different cities have different traffic issues and accordingly the authorities have been asked to prepare detailed plans, the official added. Traffic management is not only for junctions but will encompass roads leading to them, he said, adding that vehicle drivers will also have to be trained to solve traffic issues.
