Central Govt Announces Increase in Minimum Wage Rates with Revised Variable DA

In a major move to support workers, particularly those in the unorganised sector, the central government has announced an increase in minimum wage rates by revising the Variable Dearness Allowance (VDA). The Ministry of Labour and Employment made the announcement in a release on Thursday, highlighting the adjustment aimed at helping workers manage the rising cost of living.

The revised wage rates will benefit workers in various sectors such as building construction, loading and unloading, watch and ward, sweeping, cleaning, housekeeping, mining, and agriculture under central sphere establishments. The new rates will come into effect from October 1, 2024, following the last revision in April 2024.

Minimum wage rates are classified based on skill levels—unskilled, semi-skilled, skilled, and highly skilled—as well as by geographical area categories—A, B, and C. In area “A,” unskilled workers in construction, sweeping, cleaning, and loading and unloading will now receive Rs 783 per day (Rs 20,358 per month). Semi-skilled workers will earn Rs 868 per day (Rs 22,568 per month), skilled and clerical workers Rs 954 per day (Rs 24,804 per month), while highly skilled workers, including those in watch and ward with arms, will receive Rs 1,035 per day (Rs 26,910 per month).

The central government revises the VDA biannually, effective April 1 and October 1, based on the six-month average increase in the Consumer Price Index for industrial workers. Detailed information on the revised minimum wage rates across different sectors, categories, and areas can be found on the website of the Chief Labour Commissioner (Central), Government of India (clc.gov.in).
