The boys’ hostel of NHL Medical College, located in Paldi Ahmedabad has been in a neglected state since its closure in 2019, according to Shehzad Khan Pathan, Opposition leader of the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC). The party has criticised the AMC’s move to construct new hostel for medical students at the Sabarmati Riverfront while the existing ones in Paldi and Ashram Road areas have not been renovated for years. It has termed the move a waste of money.
The NHL boys hostel, which was established in 2007, has remained shut for five years without any explanation from the authorities. Pathan alleged that the facility’s deterioration is a result of absence of occupants and a lack of maintenance. Despite the building being newly constructed, it was closed shortly after, leaving it in a dilapidated state.
He claimed that the AMC has an annual budget of Rs 12,000 crore, but the existing hostels have not seen improvements, with authorities citing a shortage of funds as the reason for the delay.
Approximately 1,100 medical students are currently residing in the recently built hostel of SVP Hospital, but a large number of students are left without accommodation.
The Opposition leader has urged the AMC to take immediate action and prioritise the renovation of the boys’ hostels to accommodate the students.
