Ahmedabad received an average of 58.31 mm rainfall Tuesday as the rain continued intermittently almost throughout the day. Of the seven zones in the city, North Zone received the highest rain at 74.49 mm, followed by East at 74.09 mm and South at 69.75 mm. As the India Meteorological Department has warned of “heavy to very heavy” rainfall in the city on Wednesday, all municipal schools have declared a holiday.
Between 12 am and 6 pm on Tuesday, Ramol and Naroda received the highest rainfall at 79 mm (3.82 inches), followed by 85 mm (3.35 inches) in Maninagar and 75 mm (2.95 inches) in Odhav.
As the water level at the Vasna Barrage touched 127.50 feet on Tuesday evening, 19 gates were raised by three feet and four gates by four feet to release water into the Sabarmati river. The Sabarmati Riverfront has been closed to the public due to high water levels.
While eight underbridges had to be closed in Ahmedabad due to water-logging, all but one of them — at Chandlodiya — had been cleared and opened to traffic by Tuesday evening.
In view of the heavy rainfall warning, Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) School Board has declared all schools to be shut for the second day on Wednesday.
