The Homeland Security Investigation (HSI) arrested two people — a man from Gujarat and his Chinese associate involved in a gold scam worth $1 million (₹83.95 lakh), reported the media.
Patel was arrested on July 29 for scamming a couple from New York. The couple had reportedly received an email from PayPal Inc stating that their account had been charged $456.88. It contained two contact numbers.
When they called, they spoke to someone posing as a Microsoft employee, who then transferred them to a woman pretending to be an FTC assistant director.
She claimed their personal information was compromised and their finances were at risk. She used a real FTC director’s name and a similar email address to convince them. She then advised them to liquidate their assets and place them in a “treasury locker” to protect themselves, according to local media reports.
The Chinese woman was also involved in cheating a couple from Maryland of $331,817 in a similar manner. Both the cases were linked by HSI based on Patel’s call records.
